    How steps turn into distance

Your stride length is about 41–42% of your height. Multiply that by your steps and you get your distance. That's why the same 10,000 steps can be 7 km for one person and 8 km for another.

    Plan a walking challenge

Pick how many days you want to walk and a daily step goal, and the planner shows your total steps and distance. A 30-day challenge at 7,500 steps a day is about 225,000 steps, roughly the distance of a long road trip on foot.

Tips to walk more every day

Take a 10-minute walk after meals, walk during phone calls, use the stairs and park a little farther away. Small walks add up fast.

    Track your challenge

Our Step Tracker web app turns your days and daily steps into one big goal that loads up as you log your walks, with calories, distance, streaks and a forecast of when you'll finish. No download, no account, no subscription.

    FAQ

    Good to know.

How many steps are in a kilometer?

For most adults, about 1,250–1,500 steps make one kilometer, and about 2,000–2,400 steps make one mile. Taller people take longer steps, so they need fewer.

    How far is 10,000 steps?

Roughly 7–8 km or 4.5–5 miles for an average adult. Use the calculator with your height for a closer number.

How many calories does walking burn?

Very roughly, about 0.04–0.05 kcal per step for a 70 kg person, or around 400 kcal for 10,000 steps. Heavier people burn a little more.

Do I really need 10,000 steps a day?

No. Research shows benefits start well below that, around 6,000–8,000 steps a day for many adults. Any increase from your usual number is a win.
